Want to check your tax return status? If yes, check your refund in minutes using Where’s My Refund? tool available on IRS.gov that's one of IRS's most popular online features-gives you information about your federal income tax refund. The tool gives you access to your tax return and refund status anytime. All you need is internet access and three pieces of information:
- Your Social Security number or Employer Identification Number as used on the return.
- Filing status (i.e., single, head of household, married filing jointly, married filing separately).
- The exact refund amount as filed on the return.
You can use Where’s My Refund? to start checking the status of your return within 24 hours after the IRS receives your e-filed return or 4 weeks after you mailed your paper return. It has a tracker that displays progress through 3 stages:
(1) Return Received,
(2) Refund Approved, and
(3) Refund Sent.
Where’s My Refund? updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight. You should remember that checking the status more often will not produce new results. If you prefer to check your refund status from your mobile device, you can also track you refund using IRS2Go app. This app is available as a free download on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon.
Generally, the IRS issues more than 9 out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days. However, some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, including when a return includes errors, is incomplete, needs further review, or is affected by identity theft or fraud.
Remember, Where’s My Refund? on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app are the best ways to check the status of your refund.
